Tramping Reports Wednesday 2013 Aug 14 to Tuesday 2013 Aug 20

Wednesday:

The Wednesday walkers carried out a Makara Clean-up day, with 22 members and 2 non-members. (Leaders David Ogilvie, Diane Head, Margaret Foden)

Weekend:

Alan Wright's trip to Kime Hut (M) ...

Hugh Barr's trip to Flat Point & Oumakura Scenic Reserve (M) was cancelled due to weather and will be rescheduled for later when warmer.

Vivien Radcliffe led the ski weekend, with 6 members. "The traffic chaos caused by the earthquake meant that 4 people decided to make a 4am start on Saturday. Vivienne and Pedro left Wellington early and escaped the earthquake and got to the lodge before the weather turned bad. 30cm of new snow overnight on Friday made a very pretty picture on Saturday, but the weather didn’t play ball, so skiing in a whiteout with snow falling was less than pleasant. All was forgiven when Sunday dawned clear and calm. We had fantastic skiing on beautiful snow, few queues and great views."

Dave Grainger led Snow 3 from the Lodge.

Saturday:

Bob White's Roaring Meg headwater loop (M) was cancelled due to weather.

Sunday:

Julia Fraser led a walk Paekakariki Overbridge to Escarpment lookout (EM) with 10 members and two non-members. They had 2 local guides from Nga Uruora conservation group to give them the background of the conservation effort and track development. They first walked a loop track developed by the group, through kohekohe forest, and then walked the Te Araroa trail section, which currently finishes at a high point on the escarpment.
