ClubNights 2009

20/01 Barbecue starting at 6.30 p.m.
A BBQ get together will be held in the car parking area outside the club hall starting at 6:30pm.

Bring your own meat, salad, drink and utensils. There won't be a formal meeting, but the Tramping Organiser will report back on recent trips and notices will be announced in the usual way.

27/01 Prospective Members' night
Bring along neighbours, colleagues, friends, or family who are interested in seeing what TTC has to offer to our prospective members' night.

This is our main promotional night, with lots of information available. Please arrive and register between 7.30-8.00 p.m. - presentations will follow. There will be an opportunity to sign up for: Bushcraft? skills, Learn to ski and Alpine Instruction. Trips of various grades? are being arranged for the following weeks, aimed at those who's like to sample tramping with the TTC.

03/02 Christmas Trip Medley
We'd like to find out what you've been up to during the holidays.

So we're offering the opportunity for a series of short presentations - say about 10 minutes long. Talks don't necessarily need to be about Club Trips. Please contact Jude Willis on 383 7476 to register your interest for this. It will be a great opportunity for the sharing of ideas for trips.

10/02 Chronology of the Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges
Ross Kerr, who has been an armchair tramper since Karori Boys Brigade days in 1960s, has been researching and writing on the history of the Tararua and Rimutaka ranges for over 30 years, and his booklet is in its 5th edition.

A Levin lawyer and member of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club(approve sites), Ross will present some facets of the history of our local ranges. Copies of the latest edition will be available on the night.

17/02 History of Baines Hut and the Orongorongo Valley
Ian Baine will present stories from his family, reflecting on a personal history.
24/02 Another Christmas Trip Medley

Ahuriri Valley Christmas Trip: Talk and slides, possibly video clips of Hugh Barr's successful trip to the Ahuriri Conservation Park near Omarama.

03/03 The Great Divide Race
Come and hear Simon Kennett talk about adventure biking.

He has participated and was placed 3rd in the Great Divide race(approve sites) from Canada to New Mexico in the USA. Learn how he completed this grueling feat which included 200,000 feet of climbing carrying all his gear the whole distance.

10/03 Amazing Nepal
Ross Bidmead went on an action packed trip, which included trekking in the Langtang Valley, climbing Yala and Naya Khang peaks and swimming with elephants in Chitwan National Park.

The grand finale was a 7 day "run" around the Annapurna Circuit, (a trip which normally takes 17 - 20 days.) This will be a much anticipated evening for those of us who enjoyed "Cycling in Samoa" last year.

17/03 Laos
Pete Smith & Trish Gardiner-Smith spent a month in Laos & Cambodia.

Tonight they will talk about their trekking, cycling and wanderings in this beautiful country with its scenic landscapes, simple village life, gentle people and healthy food.

24/03 The Munros – Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet, but they've changed!
They now are mountains over 914.4 metres high, just wee bumps by Kiwi standards.

Stuart Hudson misspent his youth wandering these hills – he'll talk about the history of "Munro(approve sites) bagging", in an authentic Scottish accent, and show slides of some of his favourite sgurrs and bens.

31/03 The Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula

07/04 From Aorere to the Cobb via the Dragon's Teeth and the Lockett Range
Janette Roberts and Russell Cooke describe how seven TTC members had perfect weather for their Kahurangi trip in January.

21/04 From Farewell Spit to Kahurangi Lighthouse
Ten TTC members recently explored the 'secrets' of this little known area.

Come and see photos of the remote beaches, coastal inlets and stunning limestone scenery as Jenny Lewis talks about the group's enthusiasm for this amazing part of NZ and shares their discoveries.

28/04 Touring North America
Dianne Hill will describe the second half of the trip she and Warwick did in 2007, when they enjoyed architecture and outdoor sculpture in Chicago, Vancouver and Seattle, followed by some tramping and sightseeing in the Canadian Rockies.
05/05 The Auckland Islands
Katja Geschke, the Manager, Conservation and Veterinary Science at Wellington Zoo(approve sites), has just returned from an amazing visit to these remote islands.

Katja will be talking about the islands and island wildlife in general and then specifically about the general anaesthesia of large (400kg!), male NZ Sea lions.

12/05 Up and Down, Mt Tasman and Chamberlain Creek
Colin Cook describes two of his intrepid journeys.

An attempt on Mount Tasman was frustrated when he and his guide Dean Staples had to turn back, but Chamberlain Creek was conquered by Colin in the company of Ken Fraser and Warwick Hill, after quite a struggle along its length.

19/05 Transition Towns: Community pathways to a resilient future
Transition Initiatives are quickly springing up all over New Zealand – and the world. But what is the Transition Movement all about?

Natalie Hormann from Transition Towns Lower Hutt(approve sites) will be taking a revealing look at where our world may be headed in the face of the twin challenges of peak oil and climate change, and what we all can do to proactively create a vibrant, resilient and truly sustainable future. Where some see only doom and gloom, Transition Towns address the challenges in a positive and creative manner with this philosophy: "We know we don’t have all the answers but we believe we have the innovation to create those solutions. And we believe that life in a lower energy future can be more enriching, more connected and simply: happier."

26/05 Winter Activities Night
It's that time of year to hit the ski slopes or climb a mountain, and to ease you into the season of winter sports the club is running an activities night.

Come and hear experienced people talk about their previous skiing and alpine climbing adventures and catch a whiff of the action this year. Bring along a friend or prospective member and get a double dose. There will be a door charge of $3.00 to cover the cost of the gluhwein.

09/06 Highlights of the European Alps
Diana Barnes spent the late Northern Hemisphere summer of 2006 in the German, Austrian and Italian Alps, visiting Bavaria, the Tirol and the Dolomites. She saw spectacular scenery and flowers without having to do too much in the way of mountaineering or heavy pack carrying.
16/06 Five Pass Trip Saga
It took one and a half years, one snow storm, one flood, two evacuations and a nearly lost tent to complete this trip. Peggy Munn and Russell Cooke will tell us about one epic after another and how they never gave up.
23/06 Patagonian Adventure
Peter and Caroline Gates will inspire us by telling us of their tour of the Carretera Austral area where they rafted, walked and did boat trips in the Patagonian area of Chile and Argentina.
30/06 Historic Film Evening
Diane McAllen presents a selection of early tramping and mountaineering films from the New Zealand Film Archive(approve sites) collections, with a focus on the Tararuas.

These will include a 1929 publicity film featuring a climb of Sabastapol, a 1932 film about the Tararuas in winter (including skiing at Kime), a 1939 film about the opening of Powell hut and a 1951 newsreel about a weekend in the building of Totara Flats Hut. Some material from Tony Nolan's 8mm films will also be screened. This evening is an introduction to the 90th anniversary weekend celebrations.

07/07 Skiing in Japan
A medley of three club members, Carol Kelly, Jo Poole, Mary Inglis and Jenny Olsen will share their different experiences of skiing at a variety of ski fields in Japan.

Come and see what Japan has to offer NZ skiers.

14/07 Ruapehu
A DVD by John Ball telling the saga of the early skiing pioneers and the story of the trials and tribulations of skiing and development of Ruapehu(approve sites).
21/07 The future of Catchpool and the Orongorongo
Matt Barnett will enlighten us about DoC(approve sites)'s future plans and ideas of our local stamping ground, the Catchpool and the Orongorongo Valleys
28/07 Predator control
Euan Kelsall will talk about bio-security and what is happening in the greater Wellington area.
04/08 The secret diary of a hut bagger
Brian Dobbie describes his passion for back country huts and the part they play in his work for DoC(approve sites) and as a tramper.
11/08 Hiking in Japan
Carol West will share her experiences of hiking in far flung places in Japan.

She will tell us about the flora, fauna, people and culture and lanscape she encountered on her hiking journeys.
