Activity summary: Wednesday 2018 Jan 10 to Tuesday 2018 Jan 16
Wednesday: Rosemary Wilson ran a Kaitoke-Dobsons-Smiths Creek circuit taking 6.5 hours of enjoyable walking in pleasantly warm temperatures and only the last hour in the rain.Three wallowed happily in the Tauherenikau while the rest of the party enjoyed a long lunch. Gorse is encroaching to an unpleasant level on many sections of the route, but otherwise the tracks are fine and it was not necessary to use the higher options on the way out from Smiths Creek, with 10 members, 1 non-member
Tricia French's planned trip up and down the two northern most spurs of High Ridge did not achieve its goal. Despite weather forecast assurances of no rain, the day was very damp. As we ascended the temperature dropped. We decided to return down to the totara stream for lunch; bushbach our way up to the new totara creek track and go home. It was still dribbling with rain at the holdsworth carpark( 7 hrs)but despite this we headed off to Greytown for real fruit icecreams-yum, with 7 members
SaturdaY: David McNabb led an Atiwhakatu=Holdsworth spurs route in partly cloudy and warm conditions. After following the Atiwhakatu Track as far as the second stream (as marked on the topo map) past the East Holdworth Track turn-off we followed the spur northwest, then west, to join the East Holdsworth Track just above the bushline. From here two of the party elected to take the shorter route back down the East Holdsworth Track, while the rest of us continued to Mt Holdsworth summit and returned via Powell Hut. Time taken 8.5 hours. The spur we followed up was generally very good going, very wet undergrowth at first after heavy overnight rain, the usual windfalls, and patchy leatherwood near the top which presented no problems, with 4 members and 1 non-member
Total 21 members and 2 non members
