Activity summary: Wednesday 2016 May 25 to Tuesday 2016 May 31

Wednesday:

Wednesday weather was stormy with strong winds, some thunder and a few heavy showers.

Dave Gobey led a Ramble "Around the taniwha (Roseneath)" with 4 members. Despite the bad weather, the only shower coincided with coffee at Greta Pt; a good day.

Barbara Ogilvie modified the Easy trip. Six hardy members went up the Silversky track from Crofton Downs, down to the horse paddock, up the other side and down to Otari for lunch before heading back to Crofton Downs.

David Ogilvie cancelled the Akatarawa MF trip because the Maungatukutuku Stream was very likely uncrossable. Instead, 7 members went to Wellington’s south coast and followed Bob Stephens on the Red Rocks, Radome circuit for a 5.5 hour work out.

John Thomson led a Gollans Valley north end circuit (EM), with 4 members and 1 non-member (12). For all the fearsome forecasts of rain and gales, they had a pleasant and almost entirely dry day out, climbing up to Lowry and coming back from the East Ridge across the upper Gollans Stream. The strong wind soon got rid of drips from the trees, and the trees sheltered them effectively from the wind. It was only well towards the end of the five hour outing that they had a ten minute shower.

Paddy Gresham led a Ngaio, Northland, Wilton circuit (M), 13 members. They Started from Ngaio Town Hall andwent via Ahumairangi Hill. They completed their walk despite the showers.

Weekend:

Pip Newton led a trip to Waiopehu Hut (EM) ...

Saturday:

Russell Cooke's Makaka Spur - Cone trip (MF) was cancelled due to weather forecast.

Sunday:

Diana Barnes led a walk Johnsonville - Simla (E) 6 members. Good, clear weather, the forecast rain not arriving until after dark. The party enjoyed the exercise, views and plenty of conversation which carried on over afternoon tea at Diana's place.

Julia Fraser led a cycle trip Mangaroa Valley - Hutt River trail. 11 members and 1 non member. They had a very good ride in the Mangaroa Valley and got to "the scone man" in Plateau Rd in time for morning tea and to dodge a very heavy shower. They passed under SH2 and on to the Hutt Rail trail to Harcourt Park for lunch. There 5 people decided to head straight back to their cars . 4 people explored the road the City Council has put in to solve the crisis of no bridge for the people of Birchville. 3 people had lunch in the sound shell. Luckily the rain held off until they were in their cars at about 2pm.

Total 51 members and 2 non members

28-29 Waiopehu Hut EM Pip Newton 233 8779
