Activity summary: Wednesday 2016 May 18 to Tuesday 2016 May 24
Wednesday:
Joan Basher - planned trip Kotumu to the sea (MF) was replaced by a shorter loop given bad weather. 7 Members (12 - 80) The tramp began at the Catchpool with Bill's thoughtful presentation of a coloured shower cap for each person. A delightful sight, but alas nobody else was in the carpark to admire us! They went up Clay Ridge, then McKerrow Track and back home on the Orongorongo Track. Although they got wet on the way up, it was not as bad as forecast, and they even had brief views back to Wellington harbour and city, and enough sunshine here and there to see shadows. Lunch at the picnic bench at Mac’s Hut, and back at the cars before 2.00pm, warm and relatively dry.
Christine Whiteford's trip Norbert Creek / Marchant (M) was cancelled but 5 did an afternoon walk through Polhill Reserve to the windmill in fine weather.
Julia Fraser led a BBB trip Percy's Reserve, Korokoro (4 members) They started at Percy's Reserve and did a circuit of tracks around Maungaraki and Korokoro to end up there again. It was very wet in the morning but by the time they started tramping at 10.30, it was just a fine drizzle. As they walked the rain eased off. Most of the trip was in bush so they didn't get too wet.
Saturday:
Chris Horne led a walk Parkway, Wainuiomata - Mahina Bay (M) with 2 members. Fine weather, despite forecast “occasional showers”. Five-hour traverse of East Harbour Regional Park. Good travel up spur from unmarked entrance to park off the end of Kowhai Street. Lunch stops at Lowry Trig, and at “Top Forks”, Gollans Stream. From c. 10 minutes down Ferry Road Track, they descended Dr Walter Fell’s early 1900s track to Mahina Bay bus stop.
Sunday:
Phil Cole led a circuit of Belmont trig (EM, 5 members). They started from Oakeigh street taking the more direct track to the dam. Then the old trapping route to the trig. Return via northern farm route and back down the northern branch to Korokoro stream and more northern track back up to Oakleigh street. A short trip for a cold wet day.
