Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue Course

Nine students participated in this weekend, a follow-on to TTC’s alpine instruction course.
They learnt how to rope up for glacier travel, how to arrest a crevasse fall of their climbing partner and perform a rescue by the two main methods. These people now have the requisite skills to venture onto glaciated terrain in the Southern Alps, opening up lots of possibilities for future trips.
For some of the training we went above the Turoa skifield to the Mangaehuehu Glacier.
On a fine but very gusty day, over thirty crevasses were rescued and returned to their natural habitat. The students had a good time too!
Thanks to Alistair Betts, Geoffroy La Marche, Paul Maxim and John Nankervis who gave up their weekends in order to teach club members these skills.
