Whitireia Park/Waerenga Hut via Middle Ridge/Redwood to Elsdon via Rangituhi/Colonial Knob/Ōtaki Gorge Road – Pukeatua Track – Fenceline Walk/Te Whiti Riser – Haywards Reserve

Wednesday

R Trip ‘ Whitireia Park’ led by Peter Nixon, Wed 26/4

Despite a windy and wet morning in Wellington, two of us, leader Peter Nixon and Margaret Foden, opted for the Ramble. We walked following the Easy party around the coast to an early lunch at the picnic tables where we could see the Easy people as silhouettes on the hill ahead. After lunch we walked back over the hill to the harbour coast and back to the cars. The annoying wind at the car park was barely noticeable when walking, and the rain was not evident until return to Wellington. A good day out.

E Trip ‘Whitireia Park’ led by Alan Benge, Wed 26/4

Nine keen people turned up at Onepotu boatsheds, Titahi Bay. All members. Weather bleak and cold with strong Southerly at first. Group divided into two (seven in Easy party enjoyed a cliff scramble, and two chose to keep to the flat areas with a more gentle ramble ). Excellent views of rugged coastline, plus a relaxing siesta in the sun at a sheltered lunchtime spot made this a great day out.

EM Trip ‘Waerenga Hut via Middle Ridge and main track’ led by Lainey Cowan, Wed 26/4

5 of us (4 TTC members) tackled the Middle Ridge track first to then join the main track to the Ōrongorongo river valley. We crossed the river with no trouble and followed the track up to the Hut for lunch in the sun on the verandah. All tracks and the Hut are in good order. The forest bush was beautiful as was the bird song. Went in at 10am and back for the school rush hour at 3.10pm. Lovely day! Leader Lainey Cowan with Jim Gibbons, Chris Ward, Helen and Richard Gray.

M Trip ‘Redwood to Elsdon via Rangituhi/Colonial Knob’ led by John Allard, Wed 26/4

The Medium trip saw 20 members walk a very elongated figure of eight starting and finishing at Redwood Station with the ‘waist’ at the point where the Te Araroa trail and Te Ngahere- o-Tawa / Forest of Tawa tracks nearly meet. After a short walk through the suburban streets of Tawa the route passed through the Redwood Bush Reserve and up the informal so-called army track to the Spencer Forest ridgeline. A section of Te Araroa then led up to the top of Rangituhi/Colonial Knob. Lunch was had at the tables below the Lookout, where this group photo is set.

MF Trip ‘Ōtaki Gorge Road – Pukeatua Track – Fenceline Walk’ led by Bill Allcock, Wed 26/4

A successful 7.5 hr trip with 6 club members. Water was flowing over the spillway of the Arcus Dam, creating a spectacular cascade. The weather was kind to us – no rain – and warm sun in the afternoon.

Weekend

E Trip ‘Te Whiti Riser/Haywards Reserve’ led by Liz Martin, Sun 30/4

10 people, 8 members and 2 non members had a really good outing in perfect weather. They followed the gentle Te Whiti Riser track from Te Whiti Park and then followed the ridge top south, before descending through the Haywards Reserve to complete the circuit.

People clutching ribbons were spotted labouring up a firebreak, as part of a fundraiser to help cyclone victims. It was great to see these efforts are continuing

Total 47 members and 3 non members
