Whitireia, Mangatarere, Waitewaewae, Wharekauhau, Wellington

Wednesday

Whitireia Park, E, Margaret Foden Topo Map
I led Peter Nixon's trip while he recovers from his heart attack. It was Whitireia Peninsula. Beautiful weather in spite of a miserable forecast. 13 members. We watched a group of school students kayaking without lifejackets the in shallow water, and a teacher calling from a distance "What about the lifejackets? ". A nice leisurely trip at the seaside for a change.
Cheers Margaret F

Visit the red mistletoe, Mangatarere Valley, M, Celia Wade-Brown
See photos
Crossing the Mangatarere Stream at fire number 820, we walked in to the cottage for morning tea along a farm track on the east of Kiddie Creek. A steep path, well curated by Alastair, past the famous mistletoe (which hadn't started flowering yet) up to the Repeater (our Internet connection) for lunch at spot height .533. Then we scrambled along the ridge, noting the beautiful Gaultheria rupestris, back down to where the cars were parked. Skye enjoyed the company and the weather was perfect.
Last picture looking down to the Mangatarere Valley Road: Liz and Chris Crowe, Susie Shaw (at Cottage), Desiree, Billy Adair, Helena W-C, Jane Pyar, Carolyn, Dave Reynolds, Plus one whose name I can't remember. I think that means 4 of us were TTC, 5 from South Wairarapa Tramping Club and 1 non-member of anything.

Waitewaewae, SF, David Ogilvie Topo Map
Six members set out from the end of North Manakau Rd, crossed Panatawaewae Stream and climbed up on to Waitewaewae (939 m).  After lunch we went SW along the ridge towards Mick to a spur just beyond spot height 739 that took us back to Waikawa Stream.  The trip took 8.5 hours.

Wharekauhau, pt 616, Corner Creek, F, Franz Hubman Topo Map
5 members went up Wharekauhau Stream, over bump 616, which had great views, then down Corner Creek back to the coast. Franz Hubmann

Saturday

Johnsonville- Kenepuru -Ohariu Valley -Johnsonville, MTB, Diana Munster Topo Map
5 of us assembled at McLintoch Street North Johnsonville in ‘pea soup’ mist and heavy drizzle light rain as we descended through toward Tawa the mist thinned somewhat and the drizzle was replaced by heavy rain.
After a stop for morning tea at Moore Wilsons (where a 6th cyclist joined as for part of the trip) we headed up and over to Ohariu Valley then back to the start via the Old Coach Road. Despite the rain, a good time was had by all. Trip time just under 3 ½ hours.\\ Helen Beaglehole, Jim Gibbons, Marilyn Richards, Paula Carryer, and Diana, and (for part of the route) Jenny Olsen; all six had been double-vaccinated against COVID-19.

Sunday

Chartwell-Skyline-Makara Hill Road return, E/M, Tricia Walbridge Topo Map
I had 7 trampers on my Skyline trip today, all TTC members and all showed me their Covid vax pass. Given the high winds we did a slightly modified version of the original trip, spending less time up on the exposed Skyline and more in sheltered Wilton’s Bush, but a very enjoyable tramp, with enough hill work to keep us fit - and the rain held off!

Total: 40 club members and 6 non-members out in the hills
