Wednesday

Jenny Mason led a climb up the Waiopehu Ridge to the old hut site and then navigated down a spur into a tributary of Blackwater Stream. We found the main stream to be quite full and to have several pools deep enough to rinse one’s undies. But it was a lovely day so that didn’t matter. We arrived back at the car in just under 10hrs, with 5 members.

Paddy Gresham led a trip from Waikanae Railway Station to Paekakariki along the route of the Te Araroa Trail. This trip, led by Paddy Gresham, is the first in a series of walks following the Western coastline from Waikanae to Wellington. The conditions were very pleasant, partly cloudy with a fresh breeze at our back and we reached Paekakariki in time to meet the 3.44 train back to Wellington, with 18 members.

David Ogilvie led a party to the Kiriwhakapapa road end and followed a sort of trail on to Te Mara (1102 m). We then visited Blue Range Hut, then followed the standard route out. The weather was hot, reaching 29°C, with very little wind. We heard or saw a variety of native birds, including tui, bellbirds, whiteheads, titipounama and kereru. Our walk took 7 h 15 min, with 4 members
