Joan Basher ran a Mt Frith from Bucks Road end The Slow Fit trip was planned to go to Mt Tauherenikau. But a last-minute alternative had to be devised when high water levels after heavy rain made the river crossing too risky.

Instead, a group of 11 had a very good day going up to Mt Frith where the old track is now cleared and usable for the first time in years.

We started from the Bucks Road carpark, climbing up the Tauherenikau Gorge Track for 20 minutes before turning SW onto the Frith track, clearly marked by a large DOC sign. The track is easy to follow, and follows more or less along the top of the spur, including a couple of quite steep ups and downs. At various points along the way we enjoyed splendid views in all directions. We had lunch at the summit of Mt Frith 645m.

After eating, we retraced our morning route for 50 minutes before turning at the junction towards Mt Finis 577m, a few minutes south. From Finis, a clearly cut track (rather stumpy - mind your toes) took us roughly south down the spur to the dam below the reservoir, then down the Boar Bush Gully Road where our tramp ended at the start of the public road on the outskirts of Featherston.

In total, about 13km walked, 800 metres elevation gain, 6 hours 30 mins.
