Activity summary: Wednesday 2015 Oct 7 to Tuesday 2015 Oct 13
Wednesday: Chris Lock ran a Ramble to Khandallah and Kaiwharawhara. They had 14 members, including Peter Barber on a bicycle. The walk went from Simla Crescent Station, along Lucknow Terrace up to Odell Heights which has magnificent 360 degree views. Then along the Piwakawaka Track to join up with Perth Street along to Trelissick Crescent as far as the entrance to Trelissick Park. The trip ended at the bottom of this park at the Historic Gunpowder Store.
Hugh Barr ran a trip on Makara Beach Walkway (EM) with 8 members. In spite of the strong winds, the trip around the beach to Opau Stream was sheltered. It was also sheltered by being in a valley, going up the road to Wind turbine B2. They lunched on the Parade Ground, then quickly visited the two gun emplacement sites, then back down the track in the wind, managing to outflank some ewes and their lambs on the way. Overall a very enjoyable trip, in spite of the wind.
Tricia French led a trip to Pigeon Bush (M) (starting at hairpin in Rimutaka Rd) with 13 members. They took a clockwise route. On the way up they met a green gecko which seemed to have been stepped on. They could see the purple inside of its mouth as it protested, but it was able to move away into long grass. (Probably a Wellington Green Gecko Naultinus elegans punctatus). It was great to see the job people had done clearing the track and creating a new section just a few weeks ago. Lovely views over Wairarapa plains and lake. Sun hot enough to take shelter from at lunchtime.
Lynne White led a trip to Bull Mound (MF). 7 members were blessed with beautiful weather. The walk up from Cone Hut is steep in places but they were well rewarded with clear views of the Dress Circle and other points in the Tararuas. They returned down the newly cleared and well defined Omega Track to the Tauherenikau River and back again via Cone Hut where they met Barry Durrant doing more sterling work. The trip was 9 and a half hours with a total climb of 2,200m.
Weekend:
Vicki Wogan's' trip did not run LOS.
Dave Reynolds may have led a trip Jumbo Hut – Off Track exploration Francis Creek McGregor Spur (M) - no report
Saturday:
Sieny Pollard led a trip to Mt Reeves (M). Four members enjoyed a very sunny and warm day. They went from Walls Whare, over Coal Stream and up to Mt Reeves . From Mt Reeves they went north along the ridge to the main Cone track. As they were there too early to go home, they decided to descend over 300m to visit Cone Hut. They then ascended back to the Cone track (up 400m quite steeply) via a little used Block 19 track. A very steady walk down got them to the cars at 5.15pm.
Sunday:
Janet McMenaman led a City to Sea walk (E). 7 members 3 non-members, fine weather and a lovely trip.
Jennifer Roberts led a bike trip Titahi Bay - Porirua. 8 members, good weather though windy at the top of Whitireia Park.
Total 61 members and 3 non members
