Wednesday: Marg Pearce The wednesday walkers took part in an all-grades clean-up around the Titahi Bay coast for 4 hour. The MF group went south from the sewerage plant, while the other grades fanned out from Shelly Bay in Whitireia Park. We collected about 40 bags of rubbish but nearly as much again in miscellaneous items such as a big plastic fishing boat float. Lovely conditions – calm, sunny and pleasantly warm after the very cold and wet weather of the previous few days, with 37 members, and 1 non members.
Janette Roberts and Russel Cooke traversed Turere Spur in wet and cold conditions. Lunch on the verandah at Haurangi hut. Six hours. with 3 members, and 1 non members.
Weekend: Russel Cooke ran a Ruahine snow tramp up the Deadmans track aiming to complete the circuit via Maungahuia to Rangiwahia hut. Unfortunately at 1300m the depth of snow forced a retreat to the road end and thence up to Rangiwahia hut where they enjoyed the warm fire and the rugby test on the radio with 3 members, and 0 non members.
Alan Wright ran a trip an very enjoyable overnight trip to Kapakapanui Hut, over the summit of Kapakapanui before arriving at the hut to find the water tank empty – faulty tap! However with water left by others and catching rainwater overnight we were OK. A lovely meal and very convivial company meant we had a good time and were back in Waikanae by lunchtime on Sunday, with 5 members, and 0 non members.
Dave Grainger ran an AIC trip to the lodge, with instructors, students and three skiers. The lodge was empty the previous week. with 20 members, and 0 non members.
