Activity summary: Wednesday 2015 Feb 25 to Tuesday 2015 Mar 3
Wednesday:
Lainey Cowan led a Camborne/ Plimmerton walk (E). 11 members and one F&B member enjoyed a walk around Mana and Cambourne with morning tea in a boatshed on the Camborne Way and lunch at the hill top reservoir with views. All done and dusted in time to gold card back on the train.
David Campbell led a walk to Belmont Trig (EM). 16 members, good weather, all went well.
Lynne Pomare led a walk to Whakanui Track, Whakanui Stream (M). Great day, seven members fabulous territory fine weather no worries!
Peter Reimann led a trip to Mukamuka (MF) 13 members went from the end of the Wainuiomata coast road, around the coast past Turakirae Head and NE to the mouth of the Mukamuka Stream (about 16 km along the cycle trail), up the stream to South Matthews Saddle, then descent via the Goat Stream Spur track and out to the Catchpool via the Orongorongo River and track. Time: 8.5 hours.
Parking at the end of the Wainuiomata coast road is much improved, with the opening of the cycle trail. It is adjacent to the bridge over the Orongorongo Stream. The Mukamuka is still filled with gravel in the lower section, making for easy walking, but the mid-section is unrecognisable from the last visit 3 years ago, as it is now filled with rocks about 300 mm in size – unstable and unpleasant travel. Route-finding from South Matthews Saddle and to find the upper part of Goat Stream spur is not straightforward. Overall a spectacular mix of coastal, stream, mountain and bush environments to sample.
Weekend:
Jenny Olsen led a cycle trip to Hinikura in the Wairarapa, with 12 members and 1 non-member. They stayed in modernised shearers' quarters. On Sat they cycled to the coast & Honeycomb rock. Sun to top of mountain on farm (Ngaipu station); and dips in the pool.
Michele Dicksonled a trip Aorangi Range, Stonewall Basin (E) with 3 members. They did not attempt to visit the basin of Waituna Stream behind the stonewall, but climbed a little on the true left for a view and explored further along the coast. Sunday morning they walked the loop track up to and behind Putangarua Pinnacles. Nice fine weather, plenty of seals, sunsets and many cups of tea.
Family:
Peter Thompson led a Family trip to Field Hut. 4 members (2 children). The children (7 and 10) did well on their first big uphill with packs on. They had company at the hut and enjoyed their stay.
Saturday:
David McNabb's OTE walk did not run due to lack of support.
Sunday:
Adrienne Vermeulen led a walk Butcher - Cattle ridge (EM). 2 members 3 non members. Very dry and hot.
Total 68 members and 5 non members
