Tramping Reports Wednesday 2013 Oct 2 to Tuesday 2013 Oct 8
Wednesday:
Kerry Popplewell led John Foden's planned walk on the Old 5 Mile track (E) with 9 members (more than 400 years tramping between them!) Track finding was easy thanks to John's markers and Kerry and Bruce's recce the day before (on which Bruce unfortunately sprained his foot). They lunched in sunshine. 4 then went in other directions and 5 continued on the Old 5 Mile for as long as feasible. Several also went to Waerenga and to view the Michael Taylor seat.
John and Dugal Thomson led a walk (EM) to Tunnel Gully and Mt Tunnel. 15 members, and 5 non-members (2 of whom were ten-year-olds). A blustery wind rather spoilt the mostly fine day, but comments suggested considerable satisfaction with this non-run-of-the-mill trip. John was surprised how very few had been there before.
Warwick Wright led a walk (M) to Rimutaka Trig, Rail Trail Summit. 13 members set off from SH2 carpark below Muldoon's corner. On forestry roads all day, they stopped for morning tea at the summit, lunched at Siberia Corner. Back at the cars by 3 pm. WX fine and windy.
Weekend:
Richard Howell's Whanganui trip was postponed as the date didn't suit several of the people who were interested. Instead, 3 members did an overnight trip to Totara Flats hut.
Daniel Rogerson's ski touring trip was successful 7 members. They went up Saturday morning, ski'd Whangaehu glacier on both days and ski'd off Paretetaitonga peak on Sunday. Weather was clear and hot, and the snow was in good condition at those altitudes..
Family:
Andreas Kubisch led a Family trip to Powell Hut, with 23 members, 10-12 of whom were children. On Saturday they went up on the tops to Mt Holdsworth, and some walked as far as Jumbo. Some of the children wanted to sleep outside that night, but as the wind then got up very high some may have come inside again. They returned down Atiwhakatu Track on Sunday, and some members even swam and Donnelly's Flat - very different from the previous year's trip which featured snowball fights.
Saturday:
On David Bartle's trip, 12 members went straight up Mt Matthews via Goat Stream, and returned by the same route. Most members got to the top. They cut a few corners to do the trip 8:30-5:30, with time to visit the pub afterward.
Sunday:
Sheena Hudson led an EM trip with 13 members and 1 non-member (who was very impressed with the outing). From Taita Cemetery they climbed and traversed several ridges to Silverstream. 6 hours, beautiful weather.
Total 95 members and 6 non members
