Tramping Reports Wednesday 2011 Oct 05 to Tuesday 2011 Oct 11
Wednesday M/F trip - Holdsworth-Jumbo – 7 + 1
Eight hardy souls came on my Holdsworth Jumbo trip and 6 completed it despite mist, rain and a little wind.
Wednesday E trip – Barney’s Whare – changed to Orongorongo Valley – 4
Four members gathered in Randwick Road on a day with a poor forecast. They travelled down to the South Coast to see about attempting a tramp to Barney's Whare. Perhaps not surprisingly, there was no one in the car park at the roadend, and it was a unanimous decision to look for somewhere more sheltered for a hike. The Orongorongo Valley proved the ideal choice. On arrival in the valley, the group proceeded to the brand new Turere Hut, a most impressive structure, which provided a lovely sheltered spot for lunch, while the wind howled and horizontal rain sheeted up the valley. It was a good day out.
Saturday M Trip – Manganui Peak-West Akatarawa - 8
On a cloudy and misty Saturday 8 members walked up to Maunganui peak. Following morning tea they descended into the West Akatarawa valley to have lunch by the "Gate" on an old logging road. The rain kindly held off until everyone had eaten after which it set in for most of the rest of the afternoon. Walking along the old road was in fact the most difficult section of the day as the winter snow storms had bashed scrub down and over the road. The party turned north-west as it met the Akatarawa river following another old road and then up a spur to point 613. The was followed by a sharp descent back to the Maungakotukutuku valley and the awaiting cars.
Overnight Family trip – Totara Flats Hut – 20
Children aged 7-14 tramped in wet weather to the hut, which was full. Kids enjoyed meeting pig hunters at the hut. Sunday was fine. A great trip.
Climbing – Mt Taranaki - 9
On October 8, five club members climbed Taranaki by the north ridge route, led by Dave Grainger. The same day, Stu Hutson led a group of four to traverse the mountain, climbing the trickier east ridge and descending the north ridge. Surface conditions were excellent for climbing with firm snow and relatively little rime ice. Total ## members and ## non members
