Tramping Reports Wednesday 2011 Jun 15 to Tuesday 2011 Jun 21

Wednesday:

Bill Wheeler ran a City walk, with 15 members, and 1 non member. Fine weather, all went well. (M)

Diana Barnes led a walk to the Makara gun emplacements. There were 13 members, and 3 non (or prospective) members. Six of the group explored a new track to the wind turbines, which took about an extra hour. All reached Opau Bay for lunch. (E/M)

Weekend:

Winter Solstice: Eleven members enjoyed a very pleasant weekend at Waerenga Hut and although they had a few showers the weather was fine and the river remained clear for the whole time they were there. Along with day walks, they enjoyed BBQ (the machine was brought in by wheelbarrow), festive decorations and gluhwein. (E)

Patrick Arnold's Ngaruahoe Traverse was cancelled due to Wx.

Saturday:

Sue Boyde's through walk from South Mangaone to Otaki Forks became a walk from Otaki Forks to Pukeatua and return, along the new track. Of course, after we changed plans because of steady rain at 8am, the rain then stopped and Wx was reasonable. The new track is well-marked with windfalls cleared and a bit of scrub cut on the tops. We missed the opening ceremony (Te Araroa trail, Levin to Wellington leg), but got to meet Geoff Chapple at the track end. 5 members (M).

Family:

David Netherclift's Family walk at Makara was cancelled due to Wx.

Sunday:

Michael Bartlett modified the planned walk because of Wx so they went from Waiau St to Lowry Bay and return, with some off-track. 6 members, one (Tony Hay) still a member though living in Blenheim. They finished with a late lunch at Diane Head's place. (E/M)

Total 50 members and 4 non members

Neil Challands: I am down to lead a medium daytrip this Saturday. The trip is Mt Wainui and beyond. We will go from Whareroa farm. The actual route will depend on the weather on the day; if dry then there will be offtrack, if wet then we will stick to old logging roads. We will meet at Paremata rail station at 7:30. I'll put out an email to the ttc-offtrack group.
