Tramping Reports – Wednesday 7 12 2005 to Tuesday 13 12 2005
Rain held off to allow six members and 2 non-members to explore new country in the Carrington Stream-Mangatarere area on Wednesday. A good trip.
Because of the rain, the Easy weekend trip decided to camp at Otaki Forks and do day walks, including the Arcus Loop, up the Waiotauru track and towards Waitewaewae. They even swam in the Waiotauru River. Two members and one non-member.
Six members went up to Kime Hut on a damp Saturday. The weather improved on Sunday and absolutely no wind. Marvellous views on the way down.
Seven members completed the Southern Crossing with absolutely no wind but mist (and no views). A very pleasant crossing.
The intended medium trip up Kapakapanui was abandoned because of the rain, and the two members completed the DoC loop walk behind Waikanae.
The Off Track Exploration was delayed until Sunday to get the better weather. Two members spent 11 hours in a comedy of errors in and around the hummocky country of the Little Akatarawa River. Our navigation all day was actually spot on but we kept convincing ourselves that we were wrong. Bad experiences were gorse, thick supplejack, old tram tracks in every direction and too many route markers.
The Sunday Easy trip had better weather, and went in to Oteranga Bay, up Black Gully, on to the top of Terawhiti Hill, down the steep track on to the beach terrace, and around to the cave. 8 members, 5 non-members.
The Family group had a casual walk around Seatoun followed by a barbeque, attended by 9-11 families.
14 club members eventually turned up on Sunday to do the work of four people Waerenga steps were uplifted from the Orongorongo riverbed and nailed into place in a very short space of time and then everyone sat about and finally wandered out.
