Wednesday 25 to Tuesday 31 August 2004

WEDNESDAY RAMBLE - 25.08.04

A ramble from Lees Grove to Lowry and back along Rata Ridge and down Fern Gully. Lots of debris on the track, including two or three trees, but this did not prove too difficult. (10 members)

ALPINE INSTRUCTION - SNOW 3

Friday night at Tararua Lodge, then up to Broken Leg Gully where they climbed and dug a snow cave and spent the night. Sunday they practised rope work on the Pinnacles. (8 members)

MEDIUM/FIT SATURDAY TRIP

Went in at Otaki Forks, up Waiotauru River and climbed Pukeatea, into the snow. It was very cold. A five hour trip. (3 members)

MEDIUM TRIP - MAUNGAKOTUKUTUKU-MANGANUI PEAK

Postponed until Sunday because of the weather. Great bush. Snow about two thirds of the way up. At the promised lunch spot with the great view of the Kapiti coast the snow was about 30 cm deep and snowing still. Very cold and wet. So lunch was also postponed until we were out of the snow. (7 members)

EASY TRIP - EASTERN SUBURBS ROUNDABOUT

Five members walked the Eastern Walkway in both directions. It was wet and windy.

EASY/MEDIUM TRIP - COW CREEK

As the Rimutaka Hill Road was closed by snow, a quick change of plans, and three members headed up the Kapiti Coast instead. Went from Mangone Road end to Kapakapanui Hut. Windfalls and snow made navigation tricky, but when they arrived they had a good fire in the new stove. Sunday they climbed above the hut but deep snow and no views. Back to the hut for morning tea, then three hours out.
