Tramping Reports Wednesday 2013 Mar 27 to Tuesday 2013 Apr 2

Wednesday:

Colin Cook led 10 members on a varied day off-track in the Roaring Meg catchment (MF). After a 40 min walk up the road to the Arcus dam they sidled further upstream on the TR passing through some serious supplejack before dropping back into the river, not, alas, above the gorge. In the gorge they passed a large eel (who clearly didn’t feel any need to leave his corner), and they enjoyed some waist deep wades. Fortunately when total immersion loomed they were able to climb out - just!. (Thanks to David Campbell and Warren Baillie for allowing us to cross their land.)

Marg Conal led a trip (M) Pinnacle Ridge. Five members expressed interested in this trip but because transport could not be arranged, only three were able to actually make the trip. It was a very hot day, with 26 degrees forecast. We had an amazing view from Pinnacle (877m) at morning tea. The trip took 8 hours.

Lois Hope led a trip (E) on Cannon Point Walkway. There were 9 members. They had a beautiful day with lovely views from Cannon Point trig.

David Campbell led a trip on Hill Road Circuit, Belmont Regional Park (EM). there were 4 members, and everything went OK.

Weekend:

Anne Dowden led a family trip to Tararua Lodge. There were 27 people from 6 families (all members). They had good wx Fri and Sat. On Sat 6 adults and 7 kids made it to the Dome shelter. Sun it rained and they went to the hot pools in Tokaanu. Mon morning they had an Easter egg hunt outside the Lodge. Great time.

Janette Roberts led a trip Carkeek Ride hut (M, 7 members). Friday night they were at Te Matawai. Saturday they travelled via Arete, Lancaster & Carkeek ridge in the mist. Sat. evening pleasantly spent with 2 WTMC members at Carkeek hut. Sun. they descended the ridge below hut & navigated to Park river. v. pretty & crossable dry-shod. Then up to their well-defined spur, which they followed to the main range just south of Kelliher. Dracophyllum Biv for a late lunch in rain, then along the range in strong NW wind but no rain; Pukematawai turn-off just before 6:30. They reached Te Matawai by torchlight.
