Tramping Reports Wednesday 2012 Jan 30 to Tuesday 2012 Feb 5

Wednesday: Jean Morgan led an E trip: Four members and three non members walked from Pirie St in Mt Vic. along the Southern Walkway to Houghton Bay. Because of the heat they decided to catch a bus home from HB Rd instead of venturing up the track from the Esplanade to View Rd into Lyall Bay which was the initial plan. A hot day for walking, but enjoyable.

Sheena Hudson led an EM Eastern Suburbs Explorer walk: 5 members great fine weather day; views all around Wellington and S. Island.

Lynne Pomare led a walk Waiohine River track to Totara Flats, Cone Saddle (M) Thirteen members set out at about 9.30. They lunched at a swimming hole upstream of the confluence with Makaka Creek - all had a refreshing wallow. The uphill section of the track to Cone Saddle after lunch was really hard work in the heat. Back to the cars at about 5.30 - more swimming for many. It was still 31 degrees in Greytown at 6 o’clock!

David Ogilvie led a Fit walk to The Peak and Tapokopoko. Five members went along the Five Mile and Browns tracks to the Orongorongo River, down to Peak Stream, up to the forks, and up the spur on to bump 743 north of The Peak. They then proceeded north to Tapokopoko, and back to Catchpool. The 2 km along the Rimukaka Range was slow going through toitoi and scratchy scrub, taking 2.5 hours. All up the trip took 11 hours. We could have completed it in the estimated 10 hours but we missed Peak Stream (it was dry at the mouth), and one member developed a sore foot. It was also rather hot.

Saturday: Tim McGuiness led a walk in search of the Turere waterfall (M). 9 members and 1 non-member started; 1 member had to drop out as an existing injury played up. The scramble up Turere Stream took longer than expected, and they had to climb up to the ridge before reaching the waterfall. 9 hours.

Sunday:

Colleen Davey led a EM walk to Walls, Cone, Walls. 10 members, and 3 non-members who attended the new members evening last Tuesday. Starting at Walls Whare, and over to Cone Hut. Lunch at Cone then had refreshing swim in the Tauherenikau and down again for another swim in the warmer Waiohine River under the bridge. Great to be out on such a fabulously fine day.

Total 46 members and 7 non members
