Tramping Reports Wednesday 2010 Nov 24 to Tuesday 2010 Nov 30
Wednesday: Ray Markham ran an E/M trip to Boulder Hill. Party of six members took part on a hot, sunny and cloudless day to ascend Boulder Hill from a somewhat different approach. Lunch was taken at the summit (very lucky as no wind was present). Two members did the hour return waterfall scramble from Dry Creek Quarry Reserve. A most convivial and enjoyable day's outing
On Colin Cook's M/F trip, three members ascended Corner Creek, crossed the Knife Edge, traversed around to Matthews North Saddle and descended Wharekauhau River(which had grown a couple of waterfalls since last visited).
Pip Hart-Smith led a BBB trip to Matiu Somes Island. 16 members climbed up from the wharf on a real tramper's path, much nicer than the road. They saw flocks of kakariki and one or two North Island robins (only 10 on the island). A glorious day.
Weekend or longer trips:
Marion Wilson's lodge trip in Taupō district was enjoyed by 12 members. Based at Marian's place, they enjoyed a variety of trips, including visiting "Out in the Styx", where there is a mainland island with predator proof fence, and they also serve 4-course meals.
On Peggy Munn's Kaweka - Kaimanawa Traverse, 5 members crossed the hills from Makahu Saddle to Umukarikari road end over 6 days. Apart from day one which saw them seeking temporary shelter at a two man biv from gale force winds, the weather was perfect. Beautiful tracks and huts and longish days culminated in an 11 hour day from Cascade to Waipakahi. This section on private land alternated between easy, fast travel on the tops over Ngapuketurua and slow travel in the bush through many tiresome windfalls and overgrown track. Great country and a very satisfying trip.
Pip Newton led an E/M trip to Roaring Stag Hut. 4 members enjoyed a quiet relaxing trip in beautiful weather. They were surprised to find not many people at the hut, though there were a couple of hunters.
Neil Challands led a middle crossing via Shingle Slip Knob, rated M. 8 members enjoyed tops travel in glorious weather, a tricky down-spur route to the Waiohine, up spur to Anderson's Memorial Hut and then out to Otaki Forks via Waitewaewae the next day.
Hugh Barr's Travers Valley Climbing trip was cancelled due to lack of interest.
David Grainger led a rock climbing trip to Ruapehu's Mangetepopo Gorge and Whakapapa Gorge. 3 members and 1 prospective member. Dave Grainger did some informal instruction in trad climbing. In the fabulous airy settings at these crags, all succeeded in leading their first climbs on traditional gear. Also at the crags were about fifty "future All Blacks" -- a group of under-21 rugby talent from all around New Zealand who were on an Outdoor Pursuits Centre adventure course!
Family:
On Sunday Dave Netherclift led a Family trip to Dry Creek. There were 4 families and 17 people altogether. One and a half hour walk, particularly enjoyable as it was under the canopy, so shaded from the strong sun.
Saturday:
Dave Bartle led a Tapokopoko Circuit (M). 6 members had a successful off-track trip with great views of Palliser Bay and Wellington Heads.
Sunday:
Jenny Olsen led a bike trip to Whiteman's Valley. 7 members had a few hours' ride around Blue Mountain.
Bob Cyffers' E/M trip to Abbotts Creek-Rimutaka Summit... no report.
Liz Morrison's E trip to Mapuia-Massey Memorial did not run due to lack of interest.
Total 87 members and 1 non member
Anyone who would like to go on Dave Bartle's trip next weekend to Mitre Mid King Biv Baldy, please ring Dave ASAP.
