Tramping Reports Wednesday 2010 Oct 13 to Tuesday 2010 Oct 19

Stuart Hudson's Wednesday E/M had another perfect day on Waengapu Ridge. Catchpool carpark to Khyber Pass took 5 hours including stops, exactly the same time as last time, in a light south easterly breeze. 12 members, 1 non member. At the same time Dave Currie had 11 members on his ramble around the tracks in the Catchpool. Seven members joined Colin Cook for his M/F trip 'In search of Barton's other track' somewhere up the hillside above the Barra track. They could find no sign of an old track but the sidle was not difficult. Drizzle came in before lunch and they opted to cut the trip short and dropped to the Barra for the return for a 6 hour day.

8 members were at Tararua Lodge for the weekend. Warm sunshine made for very wet snow which was not good skiing. 5 of them, led by Robert Hawes, skinned up from the Tararua lodge to the Crater in fine weather. They skiied the Mangaturu and Whangaehu Glaciers before crossing the summit plateau in the late afternoon. They traversed above a deserted skifield in the early evening to descend Pinnacle Ridge for a visit to the AIC snow caves. Conditions off piste were excellent with OK snow down to 1900m.

Janette Robert's Saturday medium trip hadn't been going 15 minutes when 3 of the eight members in the party decided to do there own thing and stick to the tracks for a Kapakapanui loop trip. They were not seen again for the rest of the trip. The remaining 5 scrambled up the stream which drains the west slopes of Kapakapanui to the main forks inspecting a few waterfalls on the way. They then negotiated kiekie, supplejack and low bluffs onto the spur which leads up to the hut where they had a late lunch before returning by the track.

The Sunday E/M Butcher Track - Cattle Ridge trip was run by Michelle Dickson owing to illness to the designated leader. Three members copped some weather with the most exposed part of the trip being in the carpark.

Total 49 members and 1 non members
