Paekākāriki coastal walk R/E
Wednesday 2 November 2022
Eight club members met at Paekākāriki Railway Station then walked along a rather new seaside track to Campbell Park. Luckily we found some seats where we could have a warm cuppa away from the wind. We enjoyed watching the breakers rolling in, then wandered uphill to the entrance of Queen Elizabeth Park. After following a pleasant bush track beside a meandering stream we made a short detour to view a urupā on a small hilltop, then joined the cycle pathway for about a kilometre to the beginning of the Yankee Trail.
There, three ramblers decided to eat lunch, then return. The Easy group of five walked over slightly hilly terrain to the American WWII memorials, passing a picturesque little pond that many had never seen before. They decided to return for lunch and, instead of going back the same way, crossed the cycle path and went down to the beach. The wind was now behind them, so they did a fast walk back along the shelly beach dodging the incoming tide.
