Conservation planting at Baring Head
Saturday 30 July 2022
After a very wet week, the sun appeared on Friday showing promise for planting on Saturday. Jo Greenman (Greater Wellington City Council Ranger), Paula Warren (Friends of Baring Head chairwoman and DOC Rep) and Jane-Pyar Mautner (TTC volunteer) delivered all the gear to site. The weather had looked clear earlier when leaving home however, it soon thickened, and rain set in. They met the TTC volunteers sitting in their cars, some with a touch of disbelief that the planting was going ahead. In true tramping spirit, they emerged and after an interesting background and safety briefing from Jo swung into full action.
Gumboots earned their worth in the soggy ground as did Macpac rain gear. Chocolate and oranges, and JP’s home baking helped fuel the team. The rain let up for a brief period in the four hours where 275 plants were snugly tucked in the ground helping the restoration of the Baring Head valley. Lucy won the estimated count for their number and the worthy planting gesture by the volunteers from our club was much appreciated by the Rangers.
