Waikanae to Paekakariki M
Wednesday 20 July 2022
Four sensible souls delivered the Wednesday Medium trip in fine style despite the forecast. We walked from the Waikanae train station along the river, through the estuary reserve and down to the beach. Parkas on, parkas off, we were chased by some random drizzle but no wind and it was quite mild. The beach conditions were good and we ticked off the kilometres at a quick pace until we stopped for lunch in the park at Raumati.
Pushing on, we had to jump out of the way of greedy waves on an incoming tide and Tony noticed that the southerly had arrived. By the time we reached the beach at Queen Elizabeth Park, we had a gentle southerly in our faces and a few spots of moisture which soon turned into steady drizzle. When we reached Paekakariki station, we were very damp but it wasn’t long to wait for our trains home, and then the rain set in.
We had covered 23 km in 5.25 hours including our lunch stop. We all enjoyed a trip beside the sea for a change.
