Mt Barton circuit
19 September 2012
The Wednesday medium trip in the Mt Barton area on 19 September unexpectedly turned into a medium-fit when considerable snow damage was discovered. The group of 18 – including two non-members – first climbed Mt Barton (627m) via the gully heading NNE off the old tramline. The return route headed north to the saddle and then dropped into the Little Akatarawa River.
Trip organiser David Ogilvie reports that what used to be called an E/M trip turned into an M/F when massive damage to the bush in the upper reaches of the stream was found, caused by snow last August. “Progress was just short of impossible in places. Consequently some people may not have arrived home much before 6.30 instead of the anticipated 5 p.m.” John Thomson was guide for the trip, which had been re-scheduled because of damage to bush in the Carrington area
