Rangituhi/Colonial Knob figure of eight, Medium trip.

11 July 2012

Nineteen people attempting a convoluted winter assault on Rangituhi/Colonial Knob (458m) were rewarded for their courage by a sunny, still day.

From the park entrance on Raiha St, Elsdon, we headed roughly north to explore the intriguing kohekohe forest of the Porirua Scenic Reserve, much of it following a rough possum trap track, gradually circling and climbing to the main track leading to the Knob.

We were able to lunch in warm and relaxed fashion, enjoying the splendid 360° views. After dropping in a southerly direction from the summit, we wandered past the pretty lake at the bottom of the valley and returned to a farm road, where we ascended once more towards the ridge and the sun for our afternoon tea break.

The trip finished on the well-groomed track that drops down through the bush to the carpark on Raiha St. Total achievement: 5½ hours of winter happiness. JB
