Fun in the snow for family groups at Tararua Lodge

the July school holidays, 2012

Jenny Jackson reports on a family ski trip in the July school holidays, 2012 For many years now we have been so lucky to have enough snow and the mountain open only just before our trip in the 2nd week of the July school holidays, and this year was no exception.

Thirteen family groups came and went during a fantastic week of wonderful skiing. The weather was more like spring weather than July weather for six days - bluebird clear days and not a breath of wind. The days started off a bit icy and hard, but after softening a little, the snow stayed nice until the lifts stopped us skiing at 4pm.

Unfortunately on Saturday there was low cloud and visibility was not the best, and on Sunday the mountain was closed and it was raining, washing away some snow.

As always, the (lack of) crowds on the mountain during the school holidays are a well kept secret, and there was only once I stood in a queue for more than five minutes.

Of the 42 people on the trip, ten had never been to the Lodge before, and all were impressed with our facilities and enjoyed a great holiday.

Another great family week, with great company, wonderful food and fantastic weather.
