A fair weather alternative to the sidle trail between the Cow Creek and Arete Forks huts, is to follow the river, the 'Upper Waingawa Gorge'. Depending on river level, a couple of rock scrambles around pools and a minor swim may be needed. At low water a time of 2 hours and dry shorts have been reported, but party time will tend towards 3 hours.
