Centenary Tramp
Date: Sunday 30th June, 9:45am
Location: Johnston Hill to Mt Kaukau. Meet at Johnston’s Hill carpark, Hatton Street.
In October 1919 the newly formed Tararua Tramping Club ran its first trip from Johnston's Hill in Karori, to Mt Kaukau in preparation for the first trips into the Tararuas. Not so straightforward back then, eight hours was allowed and two people went the wrong way in mist and ended up in the Ōhāriu valley.
As part of our Centenary Celebrations we re-ran this trip without losing anyone.
The trip
We arrived at the Kaukau trig station around 12:45, for a group photo and lunch. We returned down the Simla Crescent track.
We left the Johnston’s Hill carpark at about 10:15am for leisurely walk of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours along to Kaukau. While the route is very exposed to wind and anyone undertaking this walk will need to be sensibly dressed the weather was in fcat perfect, very few trampers recognised this Wellington weather. There were also opportunities for people to arrive at Kaukau from other starting points for time and distance concerns. For people leaving from the immediate area at Khandallah it was 45 to 60 minutes to reach the top.
The short walk option
Met at Awarua St railway station at 10.15. They walked up Bell's Track and then over to Mount Kaukau to meet up with the main group for the photo and lunch. Organised by Lois Hope.
Food
Participants brought snacks, drinks, plus a lunch. Sponsorship was from Whittakers Chocolates and Bivouac, and there were several Chocolate Angels on the route, plus there were fresh Tararua Biscuits.
