Lecture 1: checklist for leaders
- read the Leader notes
- organise biscuits for the night. Email Carol Kelly -> mailto:ttc [period] treasurer [snail] ttc [period] org [period] nz?Subject=Query from TTC website on 04 972 5895 your receipt and get her to pay you directly.
- topics to cover:
- gear and equipment
- clothing
- food
- what compass to purchase ready for Bush 1 (1 day field trip)
- hand out:
- gear list
- Bushcraft Manual
- give out details for Bush 1 (refer template for info sheet to students. Do this in consultation with trip leader for Bush 1.)
- meeting time and place
- gear and food for walk
- transport : 4 per car; organise drivers; payment for fuel. $10/car has been budgeted.
All instructors and assistant instructors need to be transported. The students provide food for the instructors and assistant instructors. Instructors and assistant instructors do not pay towards fuel. Instructors and assistant instructors receive maps to keep, as well.
Lecture 2: checklist for leaders
Topics to be covered: (nominate who is covering what topic)
- river crossing (DVD available in Bushcraft Lever Arch Folder)
- weather and hypothermia (power point available)
- risk management (power point available)
- scenario exercise (Written info available. PDF)
- first aid
- and the environment. (Call on Michele Dickson and Chris Horne)
You may not get through all of these topics in Lecture 2. Some can be covered in Lecture 3. If certain topics have not been covered, then let Leader for Lecture 3 know, so that instructors involved in Lecture 3 can cover the topic(s)
Handouts
Maps and brochures in Bushcraft cupboard.
- brochures on Bushcraft; Bushcraft – Plan to Survive; Outdoor First Aid – Preventing Hypothermia; Outdoor Safety Code DL; Wellington Botanical Society (incomplete sets of older brochures include Hypothermia; Survival; Going Bush; Rivers the Power to Kill)
- gear list and food for planning for Bush 2. (Have been given this in Lecture 1. Check who needs another copy)

Planning for Bush 2
Camping in Smiths Creek area. Plan in conjunction with leader of Bush 2
- check that people in each group are of a similar ability. Get feedback from leader of Bush 1, for any changes that may need to be made.
Work in ability groups and organise:
- gear (includes cookers and tents/tent flys)
- food
- map and compass required for each student. (Students keep the map: Featherston BP33 as part of course fees)
- transport : 4/car; organise drivers; payment for fuel. $25/car has been budgeted. Lecture 3: checklist for leaders
- check with leader from Lecture 2, if any topics need to be covered eg weather and hypothermia etc.
- arrange who will cover the topics. Refer Lecture 2 checklist as to what information already exists as Power Point/written info/DVD.
- oversee each group in planning their trip for Bush 3.
- instructors and assistant instructors to work alongside each group.
- groups to choose from a selection of possible trips.
- refer notes on next page.
- check that people in each group are of a similar ability. Get feedback from leader of Bush 2, for any changes that may need to be made.
- gear list and food
- organising a trip (written handout)
- map of area that group is tramping to. (if there is a shortage of maps, contact convenor) Students may already have the required map(s).
Instructors for Bush 3 need to be present for the last 30 minutes, to meet their group and to check their planning and proposed trip.
Last 30 minutes: Organise
- transport: 4/car; drivers; payment for fuel. - date, time, and place of departure for Bush 3. (Leaves Friday after work. Commonly the place of departure is Platform 9 at the Wellington railway station)
