Easy Trip Silverstream
Pleasant weather attracted nine club members to last Wednesday’s Easy Walk. From Silverstream Railway Station the trail extended north alongside the Hutt River to a circular walkway along the perimeter of Trentham Memorial Park, which took in two sections of Bartons Bush. The return walk retraced steps. The highlight of the walk was a very pleasant diversion from the Hutt River path to Heretaunga Park through a young low forested area beside the Mawaihakona Stream.
Easy Medium Trip City Parks
It was a splendidly sunny and calm day and the party of eight met at the Wellington railway station. We walked via Hobson st, Katherine Mansfield park and a walkway below Wadestown road to an entrance to Te Ahumairangi Park. We then e o spent rest of the morning on many of the lesser trails in Te Ahumairangi park, weaving our way via the quarry to the Thorndon end, ascending the steep southernmost track to Stellen's memorial and descending the Stellen trail and exiting via Patanga Crescent. We had lunch at the Rose Garden followed by a tour of the botanic gardens staying off the main trails. From the cable car top we walked down to Kelburn Park to finish.
Medium Trip Western Hills, British Peak, Jessie's Peak
Perseverance paid off. After three previous attempts in the past year were thwarted by storms, we finally had a perfect day to tramp the Western hills and valleys. 24 members completed the circuit which commenced in the Otari Bush, climbed up to and across the Skyline behind Crofton Downs, reached out to British Peak and Jessie’s Peak, included diversions to explore prominent rock outcrops, a scramble through dense scrub and steep slope down to North Makara river valley, followed by a hands and knees climb out of the valley toward Johnston Hill, and tracks back through Otari Bush. We enjoyed panoramic views of the Makara coast, Cook Strait and across to the Marlborough Sounds and the snow-capped Kaikoura mountains. 12.3 kilometres were covered in just under 6 hours. A wonderful day. Participating TTC members: Alistair Beckett, Andy Leslie, Angela Vanderpoel, Ann McIlroy, Bob Buckle (leader), Carolyn Jenkins, Cathy Wylie, Christine Whiteford, Diana Suggate, Howard Symmes, Joan Basher, Joanne Gapes, John Willett, Karen Vaughn, Leonore Hoke, Linda Beckett, Marg Pearce, Mary Perkins, Peter Morten, Peter Smith, Rachel Fry, Sieny Pollard, Susan Guscott, Trish Gardiner-Smith.
Slow Fit Trip Remutaka Circuit
Instead of ascending a snowless Taratahi (Mt Holdsworth) that trip was postponed and we went into the Remutakas. Taratahi was meant to be a snow ascent and can wait until a suitable fall. We ascended to North Saddle, the Saddle north of Mt Matthews (Maori name not readily available), continued north along the range almost to point 830 and then descended a spur back to the Orongorongo river and walked back out to the Catchpoole. A great little adventure. With 11 on board at least some of the time.
