Wednesday 21st

R around the waterfront led by Peter Nixon. 6M

Six old members met at Wellington rail station for the Waterfront Wander. After a brief discussion we accepted Paul's suggestion to walk the waterfront visiting any art galleries open on the way. No at art galleries were open but we had a visit to the Wellington Museum (formerly the Museum of City & Sea), known to all of us but not visited for years. The actual walking was as pleasant as it could be: no wind, no rain, warm and cloudy enough to have no glare from the sun. We stopped for lunch at seats near the old Herd Street Post Office. Then we walked to Oriental Bay to have coffee at a café as a finale. An easy walk to Courtenay Place for a good choice of buses home.

E tramp Rangituhi /Colonial Knob from Ōhāriu Valley led by Michele Dickson. 9M 1NM

On a faultlessly fine day, 9 members and one about to rejoin set forth on a return trip over a popular section of Te Araroa, starting from the Broken Hill car park at the end of Ohariu Valley. Enjoying the bush and pines first, lunch was taken on the top of Rangituhi/Colonial Knob where the extensive views were absorbed from both the southern and northern seats, positioned so well on either side of the mast’s enclosure. Two members needed to be back in town a.s.a.p, and made a speedy descent and road walk to Keneperu Station, while the rest of us ambled over to another outcrop before leisurely returning to the cars.

E M tramp Butcher Track, Cattle Ridge led by Pip Newton. 7M

Seven trampers enjoyed a beautiful walk along the Cattle Ridge on Wednesday. The morning tea detour to the lookout was a bit disappointing with the gorse surrounding a small circular space growing so thick and high took out the view while sitting. The lunch spot, 3 mins along Browns Track did not disappoint, beautiful view and sunny. A relaxed and enjoyable 6 hours in the bush.

M tramp Paekakariki to Plimmerton led by Peter Morten. 19M

We left Paekakariki around 9, on a gloriously fine and calm day. We completed the Escarpment Walk, had an enjoyable lunch at the community garden in Pukerua Bay, then continued along the Taua-Tapu track past the cemetery, through farmland, down to Plimmerton Beach and back to the station. Just under 6 hours in all, 18 kms and about 400m of ascents. A very enjoyable day, with fine views.

S F tramp Off-track adventure through the Kaitawa Scenic Reserve led by Bill Allcock. 4M

The trip started at the South Mangaone Rd end (Waikanae). The group of four members immediately crossed the Waikanae River, with only minor water incursion into some boots. The first hour's travel was generally NW following a tributary upstream and then a 60+ metre steep grunt up to a ridge line. The party then turned to a general NE direction and made our way to point 466 for lunch.

From point 466 travel was generally east through untracked territory, with close contact with a local resident -surname Jack; first name Supple. The party descended to the Mangaone walkway down a spur heading in a SE direction and then a comfortable plod back to the car. Seven hours.
